A Yorkshire Ripper victim who survived one of his attacks has died aged 82 - after she lived with the horrific memories for over 35 years.

Olive Smelt was struck twice on the head with a hammer and had her body slashed by Peter Sutcliffe who later went on to murder 13 women.

Her family said she never fully recovered from the attack and relied heavily on them for support.

Mrs Smelt, of Halifax, West Yorkshire, died unexpectedly on Wednesday in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary after contracting pneumonia.

Her daughter Julie Lowry said: 'She never got over that night but did well to survive and had to learn to accept what happened mentally.

'But physically her mobility was never the same. She had been through hell and suffered in pain in silence.'

'We are all really sad at the moment. Mum was thoughtful and caring and was my world,' said Mrs Lowry. 'May she rest in peace now.'

Mrs Smelt was Sutcliffe's second victim and was 46 when she was attacked by him in 1975.

She had been drinking in a pub and was targeted by the killer who was also in the pub.

As Sutcliffe drove home towards Bradford with a friend he noticed Mrs Smelt, stopped the car and told his friend he would be back shortly.

He then followed her and assaulted her near her home but was disturbed and fled, returning to the car nearly 20 minutes later.

Sutcliffe has since lost appeals against his life imprisonment - a decision which the Smelt family fully support.

'We definitely don't want him out,' said Mrs Lowry.

Mrs Smelt is also survived by another daughter Linda and son Stephen.

Sutcliffe, now 64, murdered 13 women over five years and was jailed for life in 1981.
