According to new research, it is possible that genetics may play a part in how a person leans politically.

A study, led by scientists at the University of San Diego, as well as Harvard University suggests the people “with a specific variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults.” But those subjects may lean more to the left if they were very social during their teen years.

DRD4 is a dopamine receptor gene, and the research shows that ideology is affected by both the gene and social factors. The study stated, “It is the crucial interaction of two factors — the genetic predisposition and the environmental condition of having many friends in adolescence — that is associated with being more liberal.”

James Fowler of UCSD stated, “These findings suggest that political affiliation is not based solely on the kind of social environment people experience.” The same was said to be true of everyone, no matter the race, culture, sex or age, according to ‘NBC’.
