A new and more compact version of a breast scanner have been developed to aid in the detection of breast cancer.
The new device uses radio waves and not X-Rays to detect the tumors in the breast. The waves that are emitted are similar to that of mobile phones making them safer to use than. The smaller device which is the size of a lunchbox can be used in the house and it takes just a minute to make the diagnosis. Its data can be read on any computer and diseased cells and tissues are shown in red on the computer.
The device that consist of a cup that fits into the breast is thought to be more safer and better in detecting cancerous cells and tissues than the traditional mammogram that is currently used to locate cancerous cells. Mammogram scanners can just detect 60% of cancerous cells in the breast of women under the age of 50 years. This is because at that age, the breast is denser making the detection difficult.
The new scanner was developed by Professor Zhipeng Wu, from the University of Manchester. He explained that, “The system we have is portable and as soon as you lie down you can get a scan - it’s real-time. The real-time imaging minimizes the chance of missing a breast tumor during scanning.”
