Fighting between two Muslim sects on Indonesia's West Java Island killed six people Sunday, local officials said.

The Antara news agency said dozens of members of the minority Ahmadiyah sect arrived in the village of Umbulan Saturday night, and orthodox Muslims demanded they leave.

Villagers armed with swords and spears attacked the group and one of the minority group had his right arm nearly severed, which escalated the violence, the report said.

A community leader told Antara six of the Ahmadiyah sect were killed.

Sunday, about 1,000 villagers staged a demonstration outside the home of the local Ahmadiyah leader, the report said.

In 2008, the Indonesian government bowed to orthodox Muslim pressure and ordered the sect to stop recruiting devotees, based on a dispute about who was the final Muslim prophet.
