At least 35 homes have been destroyed in a wildfire burning in the southern suburbs of Perth, Australia.

One firefighter was injured when he was hit by an emergency vehicle while fighting the blaze that began midday Sunday in Roleystone and Kelmscott, southeast of Perth.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority, FESA, urged its ground crews to keep people safe.

"Life is more important than homes," said a radio message monitored by UPI. "If you can not save the homes, make sure there are no people involved. Please make sure if there are people within the fire area to evacuate them and not to worry about the houses at this time."

Strong winds blowing overnight hampered efforts to control the fire.

Two other fires were burning out of control to the northeast of the city.

Residents were evacuated Saturday night from Red Hill, where fire has burned through more than 1,976 acres, and nearly 12,356 acres were reported scorched in Coorow.
