The Sun is offering a £50,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of Joanna Yeates' killer.

It comes as police continue the manhunt for whoever murdered the 25-year-old.

She was found strangled in a rural lane on Christmas Day but detectives are yet to report a major breakthrough.

The newspaper's managing editor, Graham Dudman, told Sky News that the decision to offer the reward was inspired by readers.

"This is one of these rare, and unfortunate cases, that has really touched the nation and we have had a huge response from our readers imploring us to help," Mr Dudman said.

He explained that Avon and Somerset Constabulary had been made aware of the announcement after some previous reward offers led to police being distracted by false leads.

"That is an issue that we were in discussion with the police about," he said.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: "I am grateful for the generosity of The Sun newspaper, and I am sure that Jo's family will be touched by this kind gesture.

"It demonstrates the level to which the murder of Joanna Yeates has touched the nation, and also shows the commitment of the media to supporting our efforts to bring whoever is responsible for killing Jo to justice."
