About 160 skiers and snowboarders had to be rescued after they got stuck in a defective chairlift. The skiers got the fright of their lives when they were stranded several feet above the ground when the chairlift stopped suddenly.

Police say rescuers used helicopters and rescue workers to help save the terrified holiday makers. The incident happened at western Austria.

The authorities say that most of the people trapped were winched down to the ground but rescuers had to use helicopters to airlift about 17 others that were also stuck. Officials confirmed that the rescue operation went smoothly and no one was injured after the incident.

Investigators are trying to find the real cause of the incident but witnesses said the chairlift just stopped on Wednesday. When the skiers could not be brought down, the police and rescuers were called in to come and help rescue the people.

The highly relieved skiers were later examined and given the clearance to go home. Many of the rescuers were shell shocked and paramedics treated them for that.

The incident took place at the Gruenau-Kaesberg ski area. Investigation into the incident is continuing.
