U.S. investigators are labeling "random" shots fired at the Pentagon early Tuesday that hit windows on the third and fourth floors.

Steven E. Calvery, director of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, said investigators, led by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, were looking for evidence in grassy areas next to Interstate 395. It was unclear how many shots were fired or whether a high-velocity rifle was involved, The Washington Post reported. It was also unclear whether there was any connection to bullet holes found in the windows at the National Museum of the Marine Corps about 30 miles away.

"Right now, we are considering this a random event," Calvery said.

Tuesday's incident follows a March 4 shootout at the Pentagon's entrance that left two officers with minor injuries. The gunman, John Patrick Bedell, 36, was killed.

Calvery said the offices hit by gunfire were undergoing renovation and unoccupied. He also said there was no indication terrorism was involved.

Pentagon police spokesman Chris Layman said the identity of the shooter was unknown, CNN reported. Police officers reported hearing at least five shots, Layman said.

Pentagon police spokesman Terry Sutherland said two bullets hit the Pentagon on the south side of the building, with one hitting the bulletproof window and the other striking the structure.

Officials said the Pentagon's south parking lot and south entrance were under a partial lockdown for about an hour after the shooting, which occurred shortly before 5 a.m.
