The Crystal Cathedral, the California megachurch founded by the Rev. Robert Schuller, has filed for bankruptcy, saying it owes millions of dollars.

In its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday in federal court in Santa Ana, the church said its debts total $50 million to $100 million, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Our ministry will continue as usual," the Rev. Sheila Schuller Coleman, the church's senior pastor, told a news conference at the church's campus in Garden Grove.

Schuller began his church in a drive-in theater in 1955 and built it through his "Hour of Power" television show. The Crystal Cathedral, designed by Philip Johnson, opened in 1980.

In recent years, the church's congregation has become older and smaller. In 2008, two years after Robert A. Schuller succeeded his father, the church was hit by a family dispute that eventually led to the elder Schuller returning to active ministry as co-pastor with his daughter.

Coleman said at the news conference the church's cash flow has improved. Earlier this year, there were drastic cuts, including layoffs, cancellation of Easter and Christmas programs and reduction in the number of stations carrying the "Hour of Power."
