Police in New Jersey say a father shot and killed his two young children and then killed himself with a single gunshot at his mother's Ringwood, N.J., home.
Officers said Kurtis Birth, 38, killed his 5-year-old daughter Jada and 3-year-old son Jordan after taking them out of a day-care center Monday, Northjersey.com reported.
The children's mother, Zoey Mendoza-Birth, called police Monday night to ask officers to check on her family, saying she was concerned because her husband had taken the children from the day-care center.
At Birth's mother's home officers found the children shot to death in the house and discovered Birth's body in the driver's seat of his vehicle.
Police Chief Bernard Lombardo said there was "nothing to indicate anything like this would ever happen. There was no restraining order and no custody order in place."
"Our concerns are really for the surviving family members," Lombardo said. "It's just beyond comprehension that someone would take their children's lives."
"It's the worst case I've seen in 29 years," he said.
