Dr. Conrad Murray will stand trial for the death of singer Michael Jackson. Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter and he could be jailed for four years if he is found guilty.
Murray is not only fighting to stay out of jail but he also knows that if he loses the case, his medical license could be taken away from him as well. He is accused of administering the fatal dose of the drug propofol that killed the pop singer in 2009.
The defense team is expected to argue that Michael Jackson caused his own death when the trial starts on Tuesday in Los Angeles. They argue that Jackson was addicted to sedatives and he administered that particular dose to himself when Murray was already out of the room.
The prosecution team contends that it was Murray who gave the drug and when he did, he failed to monitor the 50-year-old singer. Prosecutors say Murray failed to call the emergency service when he found Jackson unconscious in his room.
The trial is expected to be followed by global audience. The late singer’s family will also be among the millions who will keep close watch on the trial.
Jackson’s older brother Jermaine said ahead of the start of the trial on Tuesday that “All Michael wanted to do was sleep. He didn’t want to die.”
