A massive cyclone has struck northeastern Australia, ripping roofs from buildings and cutting power to thousands of homes.
The Bureau Of Meteorology said the destructive core of Cyclone Yasi struck land at the small resort town of Mission Beach in Queensland.
Dozens of other cities and towns in the region - which is known to tourists as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef - were battered by heavy rain.
Witnesses reported seeing roofs ripped off, buildings shaking and trees flattened under the power of the winds.
The extent of property damage was unknown just before dawn because it was still too dangerous to venture outside.
No deaths or serious injuries have been reported.
Initially, Yasi had been measured as a category five storm - putting it on a par with Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.
But it has now been downgraded to a category two storm.
More than 10,000 people fled to some 20 evacuation centres that were set up in a danger zone stretching some 190 miles.
The storm will compound the misery in Queensland, which has already been hit by months of flooding that left 35 people dead and inundated hundreds of communities.
