A male nurse has died after allegedly being stabbed by a patient at a mental health hospital at Orange in the New South Wales central west.

Police say Bob Fenwick, 63, was stabbed in the chest and arms yesterday afternoon by a 33-year-old patient of Bloomfield Hospital.

He was flown to Sydney but died this morning.

A 20-year-old female nurse, Emily Pritchard, also suffered cuts to her hand in the attack.

The patient, Matthew Peter Loughrey, has appeared in Orange Local Court charged with murder and attempted murder.

Loughrey's solicitor made no application for bail and bail was formally refused.

He is due to reappear in court via audiovisual link next Tuesday.

Canobolas Area Commander Superintendent David Driver says Loughrey was arrested earlier today.

"Security and other staff went to the assistance of the nurses and the gentleman was escorted to a secure part of the hospital," he said.

"First aid was administered to the staff members, police arrived and spoke briefly with the person who was given some further treatment at the facility and he was arrested this morning."

NSW Nurses Association spokeswoman Linda Griffith says the hospital is organising counselling for the staff.

"It's a terrible shock for the staff and staff will lose their confidence in caring for the mentally ill when something like this happens," she said.

"So it's vital and very important that they are provided with all the support they need to continue caring for the patients at Bloomfield because this is a very rare occurrence."
