At least 11 passengers of the Lautan Teduh ferry, which caught fire in the Sunda Strait, have been confirmed dead, while 427 passengers survived the incident, some with severe burns, authorities announced Friday.
The remains of nine of the passengers who died in the fire were taken to Krakatau Medika in Cilegon, while the other two were taken to Kalianda Hospital in Lampung, Banten Coastal Taskforce Security and Order chief M. Amin said Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
At the time of writing, Banten seaport authorities, along with the Navy, Marine Police and the national Search and Rescue team were still trying to locate survivors and victims.
The ferry had 31 crew members.
Eight ferries and five tug boats had been deployed to help the evacuation effort, Amin said.
Separately, TVOne reported that the fatalies had reached 14, while 437 passengers survived the fire.
