North Korean troops fired shots across the border into South Korean territory, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.
The gunfire was directed at a South Korean military unit near Hwacheon, about 56 miles northeast of Seoul, Yonhap and the BBC both reported.
South Korea's military said it was investigating, the BBC said.
