Libyan rebels took over the city of Misrata, 150 km from the capital Tripoli, after the army had been ordered to retreat from the city, Al-Jazerra TV reported on Saturday.

The TV quoted rebels as saying the city is free from all soldiers loyal to embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi. There was no independent confirmation from Gaddafi's forces.

Misrata has been under a siege and a continuous and heavy shelling from pro-Gaddafi forces for nearly two months.
