A woman was held captive by her ex-boyfriend and forced to watch as he tortured and killed 29 dogs.
Police said Jeffrey Nally made his ex clean up the mess after he used a variety of tools to butcher the animals.
The 19-year-old told police he planned to kill her before taking his own life.
Nally was arrested by a heavily armed SWAT team after they stormed his remote home in New Cumberland, West Virginia.
Shocked police found a scene of sickening horror at the property where many of the dogs had been tortured before being killed in the most horrific way.
'Mutilated, skinned, anything you can imagine,' said Hancock County Chief Deputy Sheriff Todd Murray.
'He used everything from a crossbow to a drill, saws to hammers. There were several means he used to mutilate and kill the dogs.
'One dog had been shot several times. One dog had blunt force trauma to the head. One dog, we think had its neck snapped.'
Three dogs were found alive in the home and were being cared for by animal welfare officers.
Nally had found the dogs using classified adverts, often finding people who were willing to drop the animals off at his house thinking they would be going to a good home.
Some of the animals had been donated to Nally by a local laboratory.
The woman, who has not been identified, told police she began a relationship with Nally and moved into his home last December.
But after the relationship soured he held her captive, rationing her food and preventing her from going out, according to an arrest report.
The woman said Nally began killing the dogs, including puppies, in January, and made her clear up their remains.
