Birmingham police hold 20-year-old male who worked at Little Stars Nursery

A 20-year-old male nursery worker has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after police identified a young victim at a nursery in Birmingham, it emerged today.

Detectives from the force's Public Protection Department, along with local officers, arrested the man at his home in the Nechells area of Birmingham in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He was employed as a nursery assistant at the Little Stars Nursery, in Nechells Park Road. The nursery was closed today.

As part of the investigation, a number of items, including a computer, were seized by police.

A joint investigation is being carried out by West Midlands police and Birmingham City council children's services.

The parents and guardians of children registered at the nursery are being contacted by police and the council.

Assistant Chief Constable Anil Patani, who is leading the inquiry, said: "The investigation is in its very early stages ... however, we believe that we have identified one victim who we believe attends the nursery.

"The family of this child have been told, and police are supporting them at this very difficult time. As the investigation continues, we will update families with children at the nursery at the earliest possible opportunity."

A meeting will be held for parents, with officers and council officials providing an update on the investigation.

The man arrested remains in custody and is helping police with their inquiries.

In a statement, the council said: "We are working closely with West Midlands police, and will continue to keep parents informed as to the situation.

"We have set up a helpline with specialist staff to offer help and advice."

Little Stars, a privately run day nursery, was registered in 2006. At the time of its last Ofsted inspection, in November, 55 children attended the nursery although it had places for 72.

The quality of care was judged to be good and the environment was described as "safe and secure". But Ofsted recommended that managers carry out a risk assessments to "ensure children are always in a safe and suitable environment".

Little Stars employed 14 members of staff, 12 of whom were fully qualified, with two trainees.
