According to a report from the Canadian Press, eating peanuts during pregnancy has been linked to food allergies in the baby. The new study suggests that those babies whose mother had peanuts while she was pregnant were more likely to test positive for peanut allergy.

The research was done on those children who had either milk or egg allergies, or a bad case of eczema, and whether or not their mothers had eaten peanuts while expecting. Those children who showed characteristics that would imply they may develop food allergies were studied.

According to Dr. Scott Sicherer, who is the professor of pediatrics at the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, “We found that maternal ingestion of peanut during pregnancy (which we asked about prior to allergy testing for peanut) was related to finding strong positive allergy tests to peanut in the children. The more peanut they reported eating during pregnancy, the higher the risk of finding a positive or strongly positive test to peanut.”

The discovery, based on studies involving 503 babies from five areas in the United States who were fifteen months old, was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology on Monday.
