A shark attacked and killed a college student who was bodyboarding in the Pacific Ocean off a beach in Southern California, authorities said.

The Santa Barbara Daily Sound reported Lucas McKaine Ransom, 19, originally from Romoland, Calif., was fatally attacked about 8:50 a.m. off Lompoc's Surf Beach in Santa Barbara County. The newspaper said the shark, believed to be 14-20 feet long, apparently bit off a leg.

Friends and others nearby pulled Ransom, a chemical engineering student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from the water but he died shortly after, authorities said.

The Los Angeles Times reported Surf Beach, which is on the Vandenberg Air Force Base, along with Wall and Minuteman beaches, have been closed for 72 hours due to the attack.
