At least 11 people were confirmed dead and 23 missing after Typhoon Megi passed across Taiwan, officials said Saturday.
More than 400 people, about half of them Chinese tourists, were stranded by landslides Friday on the Suhua Highway, a scenic road in eastern Taiwan, Taipei Times reported.
One bus plunged into the sea Friday, the Times said. It was carrying 19 tourists from Guangdong province and a guide and driver.
Tourists from Beijing managed to escape another bus that rolled off the road and was found buried under gravel, Central News Agency reported. But the guide and driver had not been found.
Another bus was hit by a large rock, but those on board escaped with minor injuries.
The emergency services operated a helicopter shuttle to pluck stranded tourists from the highway in eastern Taiwan. Earlier, many rescue workers had to get into the area on foot because of poor weather conditions.
A Chinese delegation was on its way Saturday to represent the families of the missing Guangdong tourists.
By 8 p.m. Friday, Megi had left Taiwan and was losing strength and heading for Hong Kong and Fujian province in China, Xinhua, the official Chinese government news agency, reported.
