MANY SINGAPOREANS SPLURGE ON FACEBOOK GAMING

Several hundred Singaporeans spend more than a thousand dollars 'regularly' on their Facebook gaming hobby - including one individual who spent $8,800 over a six-week gaming binge several months ago.

According to MOL Global, between 60 to 70 per cent of the money it collects from the game cards purchased by Singapore gamers is spent on poker chips for Zynga's popular Poker game.

Most buyers of these game cards, said MOL president for global operations Craig White, are young men aged 13 to 25 years.

Mr White was speaking at a briefing where the company, which sold US$600 million (S$723.5 million) worth of game cards last year in the region, presented a survey of local social gaming habits.

According to the survey, which is not-representative, 84 per cent of gamers playing Facebook games like Farmville are students. Another 11 per cent were unemployed, while the remainder were employed.

Most said they played to have fun and also because their friends are also playing that game.
