PlayStation manufacturer Sony is blaming Internet hacking group Anonymous for allowing the personal data of more than 100 million video game users to be accessed.
The Japanese electronics firm has sent a letter to American Congress officials to combat renewed complaints about the company's disclosure following the leaks.
Many of those who fear their personal details, stored on the popular games consoles, believe that Sony was inadequate and tardy in its response.
However the company insisted it contacted police just two days after first discovering data was stolen from its PlayStation video game network.
And five days later Federal Bureau of Investigation officials met with Sony representatives.
Chairman of Sony's American arm, Kazuo Hirai, believes that the assault - suspected to be by the vigilante hacking group Anonymous - was calculated.
In the company's letter to Congress he wrote: "Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack."
The personal data theft has prompted the US Justice Department and FBI to open an investigation, it was reported on Wednesday.
Attorney General Eric Holder said that the American government is also probing the theft of email addresses and names which were discovered by a marketing firm last month.
He said: "It is something we are taking extremely seriously."
