An African spurred sulcata tortoise torched the house belonging to the father of its owner when it tried to escape from its tank.

The turtle, Giovani, in a bid to get out of the tank tipped over a heat lamp. The lamp started a fire that later got out of control in the apartment in Brooklyn, New York. The incident happened on Sunday and it took 60 firefighters to bring the blaze under control. Four police officers and a firefighter were treated for smoke inhalation.

The owner of the apartment, Ibrahim Salem, was grateful that the fire didn’t claim the life of anyone. Salem’s family were out of the house when the incident happened. The animal also survived the fire but the other pets in the house were not so lucky.

55-year-old Salem in an interview with the Post said that, “I don’t think he could have done it. If it was him, he would done it the first time I got him… How he make the fire? But thanks God he is in life. Thank God my family is safe. He was pretty lucky.”

The animal belongs to the 18-year-old son of Salem, Mohamed.
