Jackie Chan death hoax struck Twitter on Tuesday. The actor was rumored to be dead and the rumor kept growing afterwards.
It is believed that the hoax was triggered by the tweet “RIP Jackie Chan”. Some have called the hoax an April fool prank but with three more days to the April Fool’s Day, many people especially fans of Jackie Chan do not find the prank so funny.
Jackie Chan is not the only celebrity who has been a subject of death hoax. Veteran comedian Bill Cosby last year suffered a similar fate. He was rumored to be dead and it even got to a point where tributes started pouring in. As it later turned out however there was no truth in the rumor. Jeff Goldblum also had his time with death hoax when a tweet announced his false death.
The issue that has come to the fore after those pranks have to do with how serious some of the tweets that appear on Twitter should be taken. If tweets cannot be verified then some argue about how safe it is to rely on information being sent and received on the miniblog.
