The majority of baby dumping cases were committed by teenagers or women who gave birth out of wedlock.

Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin said they dumped their new born babies because they were afraid of what their family and friends might say.

He said they were also ignorant of the existence of counselling centres. Of the 517 cases of baby-dumping recorded since 2005, 18 people have been charged in court. Nine have been found guilty.

Comm Bakri said, of the total number, 287 babies were found dead. 'Of the 517 babies dumped, 203 were boys and 164 were girls while the gender of 150 more could not be ascertained,' he said. He said a total of 37 suspects were arrested between 2005 and January 2011.

In 2010 alone, a total of 11 people, including three men were charged in court with baby-dumping. Of this number, three were below 18 years old.

'Our investigations revealed housing estates, rubbish dumps, roadsides, mosques, rivers, bushes and toilets were among the top baby-dumping spots,' Comm Bakri said.
