Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan was charged on Wednesday with a felony count of grand theft for allegedly stealing a 2,500-dollar necklace.
In his ruling, Superior Court Judge Keith L. Schwartz gave the 24-year-old actress a strongly worded warning to adhere to the law while her case is pending or risk going to jail.
"So what I'm telling you is you need to follow the laws just like everybody else," the judge said. "Look around this room. Everyone in this room has to follow the law, the court, the D.A.(district attorney), your attorney, the sheriff's deputies, everybody."
"You're no different than anyone else. So please, don't push your luck. Because I'm telling you, well, your attorney can tell you what I said, but I'm telling you, things will be different," said Schwartz.
Lohan pleaded not guilty during a hearing at the Airport Branch Courthouse in Los Angeles.
Schwartz set Lohan's bail at 20,000 dollars and ordered her to return to court on Feb. 23.
"You're in a different situation now that a felony has been filed against you," Schwartz said. "While this case is percolating until a resolution is reached, if you violate the law, I will remand you and set no bail."
Lohan was accused of stealing a 2,500-dollar necklace from a Southern Californian jewelry store on Jan. 22.
The store's owner reported the alleged theft to Los Angeles police, who described the necklace as "one of a kind."
The investigators obtained a warrant to search Lohan's residence in Los Angeles. Before they could be able to serve the warrant, one of Lohan's aides turned the necklace in to police.
Lohan denied any wrongdoings, claiming that the person filing the complaint was "nuts," gossip website TMZ.com reported earlier. The "Mean Girls" star, who has been on probation for drunk driving, is already under investigation for allegedly assaulting a worker of the Betty Ford rehab clinic where she received three-month court-ordered treatment.
She was only released early last month.
