Fifty percent of the cancer patients in Panama die due to late diagnoses, president of the National Association against Cancer Juan Monterrey said on Friday.

According to Monterrey, each year there are a total of some 4,500 registered cancer patients, at least half of whom died due to late diagnosis.

Speaking on World Cancer Day, Monterrey said that the statistics had been stable in the country during the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, the Panamanian Health Ministry said that most of the cancer patients in the country are related to damages in the respiratory system, the lung, the stomach and the cervix.

In order to reduce the number of cases, the Panamanian authorities have launched a series of detection programs, through health fairs in the urban districts and rural areas, in order to cultivate the prevention culture of this disease.
