The United States Postal Services has announced that it will be closing about 2,000 post offices throughout the country.
The move is to ensure that the company’s abysmal financial run is halted. The service has for sometime now been running at a deficit but it is barred by the Constitution from closing non performing post offices unless the move is for maintenance purposes.
The service has also targeted as much of 15,000 other post offices that it wants to close all over the United States. If the Congress amends the part that blocks post offices from being closed, the service will close that many post offices. The number is about half the total number of post offices in the United States.
Many remote communities in the United States rely on the post offices to connect to the bigger world. The closures will greatly disadvantage the population at these communities.
The Postal Service however believes that the post offices are now outmoded. However the service wants to “make the smartest decisions possible with the smallest impact on communities.”
There are currently about 32,000 post offices throughout the country with the majority of them in the rural areas.
