Scientists have found that cooling the brain greatly reduces the risk of death and disabilities that arise from stroke.
The scientists are now lobbying European governments to provide more funds for the research which the scientists believe could potentially help about 40,000 patients each year.
The scientists are calling for funds to undertake an Europe-wide research to find new and effective ways of treating stroke. The study is expected to be led by the head of experimental neuroscience at the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Malcolm Macleod.
The scientists believe that hypothermia may be the way to prevent about 1,000 Europeans from dying each day. The scientists acknowledged that the financial obligation may be huge but they say that it is worth it considering the obvious benefit that it will bring.
A member of the research team, Professor Dr Stefan Schwab, who is the chairman of the neurology department at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nurnberg in Germany predicted that any amount that will be expended on the project will be recouped within a year as way of benefits.
He said that, “We know the financial situation is difficult but based on current evidence, the personal and economic benefits of avoiding stroke-related death and disability means that the trial would pay for itself in less than a year.”
