AL QAIDA KILLS 10 SOLDIERS IN AMBUSH IN SOUTH YEMEN

Militants of al-Qaida ambushed a military convey heading to a military base in Loder city in Yemeni southern province of Abyan on Friday, killing 10 soldiers and wounding two, security officials said.

The attack took place in Loder city early Friday, and the al- Qaida fighters managed to flee the scene while the dead and injured soldiers were taken to hospital. The ambush also destroyed one of the military vehicles as well as a lorry carrying water to a military base in the area, the official said on condition of anonymity.

A provincial security official in Abyan told Xinhua that death toll from the ambush rose to ten, while two soldiers were wounded, one of them was in serious condition.

Earlier, an official of Interior Ministry told Xinhua that the ambush has so far killed five soldiers and injured another two.

Deputy Head of Loder's hospital Mohammed Abdullah confirmed to Xinhua that the ten bodies were transferred from the hospital to the headquarters of the military base in Loder.

"The hospital also received two injured soldiers, one of them was in serious condition, who was wounded by shrapnel in his head and abdomen," Abdullah added.

Yemen witnessed fierce clashes between al-Qaida militants and the government troops in the districts of Loder and Modia in the southern province of Abyan in August and mid-October last year, leaving at least dozens of people dead.
