Animal services officers in California were shocked when they found a 5 foot lizard wandering in a neighborhood.
Witnesses called the animal service and one of the officers who responded to the calls revealed that she thought that the callers were exaggerating the size of the animal.
However when she found the animal at the Riverside condominium complex, she realized that the callers were more than right. The officer, Jenny Selter, revealed that the animal is native to Africa and it was illegal to smuggle it to the United States.
The 5-foot, 45-pound monitor lizard is carnivorous and the officer believes that to be able to grow to the size that it had, somebody might have domesticated the animal. The spokesman for Riverside County Animal Services explained that the animal might have wandered from the owner’s house into the neighborhood.
He said that, “We suspect that it’s been someone’s pet for a long time, because it’s so big. I think they might let it wander around the house. Maybe it sleeps on a bean bag?”
The police had to be called in before they could subdue and catch the animal.
