The world’s first double leg transplant will be performed in Spain, Health Minister Leire Pajin said Tuesday.
Pajin made the announcement about the experimental procedure at the “Final Frontiers of Transplants” meeting in Madrid, Xinhua reported.
The minister said Spain would also perform its fourth full face transplant soon.
“These are two pioneering interventions and examples of the vitality in our transplant system,” Pajin said.
“They are allowing us to incorporate with great agility, the advances that are being produced all over the world.”
The minister also noted that one in 20 liver transplants in the world was performed in Spain.
“We can advance greatly in all areas and the National Transplant Organization is there to help us with any advances and innovation which can help those in need, who are those that we are all working to help,” he added.
