So Prince Williams and Kate Middleton make it official at long last. With the royal heir and his girlfriend of eight long years all set to take the wedding vows soon, the cost of the wedding seems to be most talked about issue right now. After all, a royal wedding, one involving a member of the British monarchy cannot be ordinary which in itself means big bucks. However, the question featuring uppermost in the minds of the British citizens is the most practical one. That of, ‘Who will foot the bill?’
The Queen as well as Prince Charles are perfectly willing to bear the costs by contributing to the wedding, say the reports. While, the glamour of the British monarchy has dwindled somewhat especially in the past few years, the wedding is expected to supersede £50 million at the very least.
This certainly takes us back to the fairy tale wedding of Prince Charles and the beautiful Diana Spencer which saw thousands of the Armed Force personnel along with policemen lining the thoroughfare as the procession travelled along it watched by almost 600,000 people. The estimated amount touched £30 million in 1981, almost three decades ago.
Even if the extravagant gestures of hand sewing real pearls into the bridal gown and a total of 27 lavishly decorated wedding cakes are left out, the price for the Royal wedding destined to take place next year could easily surpass the Charles-Diana wedding.
Observers say that the cost could very well spiral upwards of £80 million with tens of millions being spent on making adequate security arrangements alone.
