Three people were killed early on Tuesday and two others wounded, including a young child, in a shooting in the Boston neighbourhood of Mattapan, local media reported.
"There were multiple people shot," a police spokesman said, declining to confirm the reports that three people were pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's still an active scene."
Boston television stations said two people, including a two or three-year-old boy, were rushed to a hospital with gunshot wounds.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the shooting but Boston police commissioner Ed Davis was reported to have said that victims appeared to have known the shooter.
