Dutch researchers say they have made a breakthrough in the battle against lethal bacteria such as e coli.
Scientists from the research organization TNO say they have found natural ingredients that effectively cut bacteria short that had become resistant to antibiotics.
The discovery has been tested using the ESBL-bacterium, but is supposed to be applicable against the EHEC-bacterium too.
The discovery will come too late for current patients, who have been affected by the EHEC bacteria, says Jan Pieter van der Lugt, director of TNO.
"We still need six months to develop the solution," he said in a statement. "Then we have to comply with government regulations. The latter is time consuming, so I estimate that the solution is only applicable for real in about two years."
Meanwhile, the Robert Koch Institute said Thursday that 2,808 people, 722 of whom are suffering from a serious complication that can cause kidney failure, have now been reported sickened in Germany, the country at the epicenter of the E. coli outbreak whose origin has not yet been found.
The World Health Organization says 97 others have fallen sick in 12 other European countries, as well as three in the United States.
A total of 27 people have died 26 in Germany and one in Sweden.
Though the number of those sickened is still rising, the Koch institute says the new cases being reported have been dropping for several days.
