Hail and torrential rains that hit Chicago area Tuesday night led to flight delays and cancellations of over 450 flights at O’Hare International and Midway airports, media reports said Wednesday.

Xinhua quoting a Chicago Tribune report said flights in and out of O’Hare were averaging 90 minutes delays as of 8.30 p.m. Tuesday due to continuing rain and low visibility in Chicago area. Airlines cancelled more than 450 flights Tuesday at O’Hare, said the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA).

There were also some delays of 30 minutes and minor cancellations at the Midway airport.

On Tuesday, at 8 p.m., the weather service’s Doppler Radar found thunderstorms producing torrential rainfall.

The radar and spotters estimated that these storms were producing more than an inch of rain in less than an hour.

On Monday morning, 0.6 inches of snow was recorded at O’Hare, which broke the previous record of 0.4 inches registered April 18, 1910, said the National Weather Service.
