One of the suspects in the book bombs and Serpong explosive, known by his initial “P”, told police investigators that he learned to make bombs by himself.
He also told police that the explosion of the bomb in Utan Kayu, which he said he rigged, took him by surprise.
“He did not think the bomb in Utan Kayu could explode,” National Police Spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said Saturday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
The book bomb in Utan Kayu exploded on March 15. The explosion cost East Jakarta police detective chief Comr. Dodi Rahmawan his left hand as he was trying to defuse the bomb.
P, who reportedly is also referred to as Pepi, is an alumnus of the Syarief Hidayatullah Islamic University Faculty of Education.
He was arrested on Thursday along with 18 suspects who police think belong to the same network. Another person suspected of involvement in the bomb attack is IF, a Global TV cameraman.
