Police are investigating the apparent double murder and suicide of a 'happy family' after finding three bodies.

Eugene Fraser shot dead his son as he lay in bed then picked up his long-time partner from work, blasting her in the face before shooting himself, say police.

Officers discovered the tragedy after they were called to the scene of a car crash in Warren, Detroit, and found Fraser, 46, and 41-year-old Donna Chance dead in the vehicle.

Chance was shot in the face and Fraser in the jaw, say police. Officers found a six-shot .357 pistol with five spent casings on the floorboards.

The body of their 20-year-old son Robert was later discovered at the house they shared in Dresden. Officers took away four hunting rifles from the property.

Robert had a remote control in his hand and had been shot in the head and neck, said Warren police deputy commissioner Louis Galasso.

He told the Detroit Free press: 'Everything's pretty much adding up to murder-suicide.

Galasso revealed officers found a small amount of marijuana and a cannabis-growing operation in the basement of the home.

'That was disturbed,' he said. 'It appears to have been altered and moved around.'

Officers have pierced together what happened, but are baffled as to a motive. They believe Fraser killed his son after his partner went to work at 6am.

He then picked up her up from Lowes store in Warren where she was employed and shot her while they were driving along Panama Street.

After blasting himself, the couple's Ford F-150 carved a six- inch deep trench across two lawns before smacking into a tree in front of a home.

Police discovered their son's death when his sister, who lives with her grandmother, told them to check on him at her parents' home.

her brother worked with their father at his cement company. On April 1, Robert posted on his Facebook page: 'First day to back to work. I hope me and my old man get along better this year.'

Fraser's childhood friend Joe Pepe and his wife, Tanya, said the couple, who had been together for 20 years, had recently renovated their home and owned a timeshare in Cancun and a boat.

Tanya said: 'Gene loved his family. Everything he did was for his family,' she said. 'This is senseless.'
