It is undisputed fact that smoking is harmful to health but researchers have found another reason why smoking is not such a good decision.

Scientists in United States have announced that nicotine raised the sugar levels in a lab experiment. Nicotine is one of the active ingredient found in cigarettes. The researchers identified that the higher the level of nicotine found in the blood, the higher the level of blood sugar found.

The study was conducted by researchers at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. The author of the study, Xiao-Chuan Liu, told reporters that, “Smoking is really harmful for diabetics. It’s even more harmful to them than to a non-diabetic. This study should encourage diabetics to quit smoking completely, and to realize that it’s the nicotine that’s raising [blood sugar levels].”

The scientists used samples of human blood for the test. They added equal amounts of glucose to the blood samples daily but added varying amounts of nicotine to the samples. The researchers determined after the study that the higher the dose of nicotine added to the blood, the higher the level of sugar in the blood.

The findings of the study were presented during the American Chemical Society meeting in Anaheim, California on Sunday.

This finding means even those who use nicotine patches are not safe as well.
