A small town in Saskatchewan was overwhelmed by drivers stranded in a snowstorm, authorities said.
Pam Scott, a local official near Midale, about 100 miles southeast of Regina, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. an emergency had to be declared Friday.
The crash on Highway 39 involved eight vehicles at first, but the area became totally congested as more cars and trucks came on the scene. No serious injuries were reported.
"Our rescue people were bringing people in off the highway all day," said Linda Dugan, administrator of Midale. "We put them up in our civic center because you couldn't see to go anywhere. And having them on the highway was creating more problems."
"People just thought of helping people," Mayor Allan Hauglum said. "Everyone was laughing, having fun. It was like a Sunday afternoon social."
Most of the stranded motorists eventually found their way out of town, Dugan said, but six people were lodged overnight because their cars were stuck.
