Paula Abdul called 911 for help alleging that her boyfriend wouldn't let her out of his car on Valentine's Day.
On the newly released tape of the call Abdul can be heard sobbing and pleading with the driver of the car to stop and let her out.
'I wanna go, and he won't let me,' she tells the call handler before telling the driver: 'Are you gonna drop me off 'cause I have emergency on the phone.'
According to website TMZ, who released the tapes, the driver then released Abdul from the car.
Police called her later to check on her welfare and she assured them everything was fine.
It is not clear who the man driving the car was.
A spokesman for Abdul said: 'Arguments with loved ones are often times heated. After the call was made everything was worked out.'
At the time of the incident the 48-year-old had just learnt that her post-American Idol breakout show Live To Dance has been cancelled.
Despite a strong start the CBS show suffered from falling ratings and was not seen as a viable option for a second season, according to U.S. reports.
Abdul was said to be 'devastated' and holed up at her California home after learning of the decision by phone.
A source told Radar online that Abdul had hoped CBS would renew the show.
'Paula loved that show and she hoped CBS would give it at least one more season to win viewers,' the source told the site. 'But they were just not willing to take that risk.
'She spent the weekend at her home, surrounded by friends, rehashing CBS’s devastating decision and wondering what she would do next.'
The show's premiere was watched by more than 10 million viewers and was last month's most watched program. But ratings rapidly declined.
