Since release, Internet Explorer 9 has been downloaded over 2 million times, 27 downloads every second, according to data provided by a blog post on the Exploring IE Blog Thursday.
The Microsoft's new Web browser, which it claims the best browser for Windows, was released on Monday evening.
According to SunSpider tests, IE9 rivals or beats the speed demons Chrome and Opera. Besides matching many of Chrome's draws such as speed and a minimalist user interface, the Microsoft browser also adds some unique tricks of its own, including HTML5 support, Windows 7 integration, a double-duty address bar and more.
However, the lastest version of Internet Explorer only runs on Windows7 and Vista, which limit its ability to grow market share.
Still, with IE9, Microsoft has the best shot at stopping the erosion of its market share by rivals Firefox and Chrome.
Last January, Chrome passed the 10 percent mark in browser market share, according to numbers from Net Applications, while all versions of Internet Explorer slipped from 57 percent in December 2010 to 56 percent in January 2011.
Firefox has stagnated at just under 22 percent, but that browser too, has just seen a greatly improved, faster, trimmer update with Firefox 4.0, which is scheduled to launch in final form on March 22.
