Facebook, the popular social networking website, is in talks to hire former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the New York Times reported on Monday.

The newspaper said on its website that Facebook is in talks to hire Gibbs for a senior role in helping to manage the company’s communications. It cited people briefed on the negotiations as its source, but gave no names.

According to the report, the talks are still in an early stage and no formal offer has been made, meaning the talks could still collapse. It said Facebook would want to get Gibbs on board before the company’s initial public offering (IPO) planned for early 2012.

The New York Times said the job offer could be worth millions of dollars and - in addition to a cash salary - could also include shares ahead of the IPO. Gibbs has reportedly consulted several White House officials about whether he should take the job.

Neither Gibbs nor Facebook did immediately comment on the report.

Gibbs resigned as White House Press Secretary on February 11th and was succeeded by Jay Carney. He said he would remain as an outside adviser to the Obama administration and will give speeches in the private sector.

Gibbs, who worked with Obama since 2004, has also served as the communications director of then-Senator Obama and Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.
