An Australian woman was attacked by a shark on the New South Wales central coast on Wednesday, local media reported.

The 24-year-old woman was wakeboarding near Jimmys Beach at Nelson Bay, north of Newcastle when she was attacked by the shark, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Witnesses say she was dragged under the water by the shark twice, before being rescued by her boat crew and taken to the Nelson Bay public wharf.

Paramedics stabilized the woman at the scene and she was then airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

She was conscious but in a serious condition when she arrived at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle about 1:50 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Newcastle Rescue Service helicopter crewman Glen Rampling told Australia's Fairfax Radio Network.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the woman was bitten several times on the head, shoulder, neck and arms, shortly before 1 p.m. local time.

Her arm injuries were very severe and further examination showed the woman had also suffered injuries to her head and shoulder, the ambulance spokeswoman said.
