The "godmother" of Australia's gangland wars, 66-year-old grandmother Judy Moran, has been convicted of killing her brother-in-law in a suburban coffee shop.
Moran, who drives a motorised wheelchair, is the matriarch of one of Australia's most notorious crime families – the "Carlton crew". The so-called "black widow" lost her husband and two sons in an underworld war in Melbourne that involved about 30 murders from 1996 to 2009.
She was convicted of murdering 61-year-old Des "Tuppence" Moran in Melbourne in 2009. She was found to have driven the getaway car to the shooting at her brother-in-law's favourite café.
Police on Wednesday released a video showing of her being interviewed at home after the killing, in which she expresses surprise at the discovery of a sleek black handgun and silencer in her safe. The safe also contained a wig, ski mask, gloves, a magazine of bullets and a set of car licence plates.
Moran claimed to have been at the grave of her son, Mark Moran, during the killing. But she appeared at the café soon after the shooting, claiming to be in shock and crying "Desy, Desy". Witnesses at the scene described her performance as insincere.
Moran apparently believed her brother-in-law was holding on to millions of dollars belonging to her husband. The gunman, Geoffrey "Nuts" Armour, who shot Des Moran seven times, has pleaded guilty.
The long-running saga involved a war over the drug trade between the Carlton Crew and a gang run by Carl Williams, their baby-faced former employee.
Williams was linked to about ten of the murders, including the three Morans.
He was clubbed to death last year in prison with a part removed from an exercise bike.
The feud has gripped the nation and already been made into a popular television series, "Underbelly".
