The Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones. 'N Sync vs. the Backstreet Boys. Tiffany vs. Debbie Gibson. Notorious B.I.G. vs. Tupac.
To the pantheon of great music-fan rivalries, we can now add Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.
Both have rabid fan bases that insist their pop starlette is the tops. And their rivalry by proxy has been heightened by the fact that Gaga and Spears have both released long-awaited singles recently.
The frenzy has been heightened by Billboard magazine, which innocently launched a poll to see who was more popular with readers, Spears or Gaga. But the poll, which saw more than 2 million votes cast, was plagued by problems, with each side accusing the other of unfairly influencing the results.
Now Billboard is trying again, with an apparently more tamper-proof poll system.
In this corner, we have Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," which debuted Thursday night on MTV.
And in the other corner is Lady Gaga, who recently released the song "Born This Way." The "Born This Way" music video will debut Feb. 24.
The debate over the poll, the singles and who reigns supreme has spilled over into Twitter, where partisans are pledging devotion.
Those gaga for Gaga are crowing because they made "Queen Gaga" trend -- and since it's the day after Spears' video debut, they think the feat is even sweeter.
As with any Internet war that gets out of hand, some are saying, "Can't we all just get along?"
