The Kyrgyz parliament has approved the naming of a mountain peak after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the state news agency Kabar reports.
The lawmakers in Jogorku Kenesh (the parliament) on Thursday overwhelmingly agreed with a proposal by Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev to dedicate a peak in the Tien Shan (Heavenly Mountains) range to his Russian counterpart.
The idea of naming a mountain peak after Putin followed Atambayev's Moscow visit last December.
However, the initiative was opposed by some Kyrgyz politians. The coalition ruling party Ata-Zhurt on Tuesday urged the government to abandon the idea.
"We all respect Vladimir Putin as a strong politician, and Russia -- as a strategic partner. But to name a mountain -- is a wrong decision," said faction leader Kamchibek Tashiev. "Why not to name the mountain tops after our great compatriots, such as Chingiz Aitmatov, Suimenkul Chokmorov? I think it would be better to give Mr. Putin the Order of the Manas, or the title of Hero of Kyrgyzstan."
The Putin peak is located in the Chui Region close to the border with Kazakhstan with an altitude of 14,586 feet.
