AN UNEMPLOYED man who stole money from his girlfriend's bank account via the ATM and gambled away the money at a casino was jailed for six months on Thursday.

Chua Yen Hui, 38, admitted to two counts of stealing a United Overseas Bank ATM card from Ms Fiona Lim Kar Wae and five charges of stealing $1,000 each from the 32-year-old's bank account in June and July 2010.

Another 21 similar charges were considered during his sentencing. A district court heard that Ms Lim, a teacher, discovered the loss of her ATM card while shopping with Chua on Aug 15.

When she got home, she checked her Internet bank account and found out that some $19,000 had been withdrawn. She confronted Chua who admitted to stealing her card and making multiple cash withdrawals to gamble at Resorts World Sentosa casino.

Her brother called the police. Chua, the court heard, would return the ATM card to her wallet each time after making withdrawals, but forgot to do so on Aug 15.

Theft is punishable with a jail term of up to three years or seven years or with fine or both.
