Scientists at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center have announced that they have manufactured the first miniature livers from human liver cells in a groundbreaking research.
By their work, the researchers now lead the way in the search to find ways to engineer vital organs in the lab. The technique that they used can be used to create a variety of vital organs. The researchers used a technique called “decellularization” to wash the liver of animal livers. The technique involves the use of mild detergents to wash out the animal cells in the organ leaving behind the cellular scaffold that the organ derives its structure from.
Human cells were then pushed into the place where the animal cells were removed from and the organ was placed in a machine called Bioreactor. The bioreactor mimics the condition in the human body and it gave the organ oxygen and nutrients. The process produced a miniature human liver and the researchers believe that the process will help to “grow” other kinds of vital organs in the future.
